National Fire Safety Week will raise public awareness about the causes of fire at home and in work.
The Fire Prevention Council hopes to make people aware of what can and should be done to prevent fires.
Every year, about forty people die in fires here and the annual damage to property is estimated at £30 million.
For fire safety week, lectures are taking place in workplaces and a series of leaflets has been issued with advice on how to prevent fires.
Pat Costello, Fire Prevention Council, outlines some of the precautions that should be taken. Focusing specifically on the home, the council has developed a checklist of things to do before going to bed. This includes unplugging appliances, placing a spark guard in front of an open fire, close all doors, and make sure cigarettes are extinguished. He also advises to,
Never smoke in bed.
