Research into a new technique for growing tomatoes is producing better yields at a lower cost.

A project carried out by An Foras Talúntais (The Agricultural Institute) at the Kinsealy Research Centre shows how tomato growing success can be boosted. Research shows it is possible to grow tomatoes in special bags of peat instead of soil, in combination with a tailored programme of plant feed.

There has been a particularly good tomato crop this year, but that is not just the result of a good summer. Paddy Gallagher from An Foras Talúntais maintains that with the new technique, growers will produce excellent quality tomatoes.

Equal that produced on a mineral or border soil.
