A four storey block of flats for older people and newlyweds has opened on Gardiner Street in Dublin.

The development was the idea of Father Thomas Scully SJ of Belvedere College. Father Scully died aged 46 in 1968 and did not live to see the complex completed. The development was named Father Scully House in his honour.

Father Scully House which has 17 double flats for older people, six flats for newlyweds and a community centre, was opened and blessed by Archbishop of Dublin J C McQuaid. The development was built by the Catholic Housing Aid Society.

Tom Walker (69) and his sister Teresa (72), are among the new residents of Father Scully House. Teresa knew Father Scully and when he was planning the development, he had promised her a flat. Their centrally heated home has two bedrooms, a bathroom, a sitting room and a scullery.
