Work starts on the demolition of Joseph Plunkett, the last remaining tower block in Ballymun.

In 2004 demolition work on the seven tower blocks built between 1966 and 1969 by Dublin Corporation in the suburb of Ballymun got underway.

Almost two decades since the regeneration began, the demolition of Joseph Plunkett, the last tower standing, commences. Built in 1967, the fifteen storey block containing 90 flats, was named to commemorate Joseph Plunkett one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

At 4:30 pm, a demolition nibbler sets to work on the top floor of the tower block. For some, it marks the end of an era. Having spent 30 years living in Joseph Plunkett Tower, Sharon Lawlor watches proceedings with a lump in her throat.

The demolition of the Joseph Plunkett Tower is expected to take four to five weeks to complete.
