Leading names from Irish sport and entertainment regularly line out for the Jimmy Magee All Stars.

Broadcaster Jimmy Magee has been bringing his all star team together to raise money for charity since 1966. Every Monday night from May to July, the Jimmy Magee All Stars travel the country at their own expense to raise funds for charities. To date, they have played and performed in 31 of the 32 counties of Ireland and have raised over £170,000. They have even travelled to Britain and the USA.

A combination of football games and after match cabaret featuring some of the leading names from the worlds of sport and show business.

After 200 games, the Jimmy Magee All Stars are preparing for a return to Ballyjamesduff, where it all began 15 years ago.

Last week in Cloyne, they were helping to raise money for the Christy Ring Memorial Fund. The outstanding hurler of his generation Christy Ring had turned out for the All Stars team on many occasions.

Cork footballer Denis Allen was at Ken Railway station to greet Jimmy Magee and his team ahead of their 199th match. As the All Star team prepared to take to the pitch in Cloyne, where Christy Ring was born, Jimmy Magee paid tribute to one of the greats of Gaelic games.

Taking part in the game were Gerry Reynolds, Father Brian D'Arcy, Tom Hickey and Ronan Collins. The All Stars took on a team selected by Murphy's Brewery, which included Denis Coughlan, Martin Doherty, Paddy Ring and Gerald McCarthy. The referee was Donie O'Donovan and commentary on the game was provided by Liam Campbell.

After the game, a cabaret was held at the Garryvoe Hotel.

Jimmy Magee came up with the idea for the All Stars in 1966. With the participation and support of former Meath player Frankie Byrne, the first match took place in Ballyjamesduff. Frankie Byrne has enjoyed being part of the All Stars team ever since.

The spirit of the All Stars is personified by DJ Ronan Collins, who flew from Dublin to Cloyne by light aircraft at his own expense to take play for the Murphy's Brewery team.

This episode of 'Sports Stadium' was broadcast on 5 July 1980. The reporter is Mick Dunne.
