Paying respect to one of the greatest hurlers of all time Christy Ring of Cork.
Christy Ring died in his native Cork on 2 March 1979. Taoiseach Jack Lynch, a fellow Cork man and former team mate believes Christy Ring was the greatest hurler of all time.
Broadcaster Mick Dunne provides a brief background to the career of a remarkable sportsman.
He established himself as the greatest hurler of the modern age during an extraordinary career that stretched over an astonishing period of twenty five years.
Christy Ring played for the Cork minors in 1938 and made is final senior appearance for the county in 1963. The first hurler to win eight All-Ireland Senior medals he also accumulated eighteen Railway Cup medals as well as numerous national league and Munster titles.
Christy Ring won fourteen county championship medals with Glen Rovers playing well into his forties.
When Christy was playing for the minors in the summer of 1938, commentator Michael O'Hehir was making his debut in front of a microphone around the same time. He would be the commentator for all ten of the Senior All Ireland finals that Christy Ring contested, as well as all of the Munster Finals and the Railway Cup matches. Michael O'Hehir has a rich store of memories of the celebrated player.
It was my pleasure and privilege to grow into manhood in the wonderful days of Christy Ring.
For Michael O'Hehir, Christy Ring had a magic flick of the wrist, a great sense of position and a great will to win on the field.
He didn't know what defeat was.
One day in Thurles during a championship game when Christy Ring was not having the best of days he still managed to turn it scoring three goals around in the last few minutes.
The natural vivacity and verve that he brought to the game made him the great hurler that he undoubtedly was.
In retirement from playing, he became a backroom boy with the Cork team analysing the opponent's every move and advising the players.
A man that brought honour to hurley, to sport and to his country and indeed all three will be all the poorer for his passing.
'Christy Ring An Appreciation' was broadcast on 3 March 1979. The presenter is Mick Dunne.
