Freedom of the city granted to Sonia O'Sullivan and Roy Keane during a special ceremony in Cork.

Hundreds of fans gathere outside the invitation only event to catch a glimpse of athlete Sonia O'Sullivan and footballer Roy Keane before a ceremony at Cork City Hall .

Generations of the Carroll family have made silver caskets for the freemen of Cork. Two more silver caskets were commissioned for the sporting heroes Sonia O'Sullivan and Roy Keane. Chris Carroll is a big sports fan and is honoured to have made these caskets.

Fans who gathered at City Hall had nothing but praise for both Sonia O'Sullivan and Roy Keane. The pair followed in the footsteps of Charles Stewart Parnell and John F Kennedy by signing the visitors' book.

The woman recognised as one of the greatest athletes of our age and the man from Mayfield, one of the world's top midfielders.

Roy Keane told RTÉ News that he was proud to receive the honour with Sonia O'Sullivan. Sonia O'Sullivan described the occasion as a big day for herself, her family, friends, and everybody in Cork.
