Liam Brady shines as the Republic of Ireland beat Bulgaria in Dublin.

The Republic of Ireland got a first competitive win over Bulgaria in a European Championship tie at Lansdowne Road. Liam Brady was the star of a fine team performance in front of a crowd of 18,000.

A dominant midfield display meant Liam Brady had a part in all three Irish goals. His pass picked out Mick Martin for the first goal and he helped Tony Grealish score the second just as the second half began. It was the Arsenal midfielder who crossed for Frank Stapleton to head home goal number three.

Brothers Dave and Pierce O'Leary lined out in defence for Ireland.

The result left the Republic of Ireland second in a group led by England.

The final score was Republic of Ireland 3 Bulgaria 0.
