Drivers have a a new speed limit which they can legally travel at it in Dublin city centre .
A thirty kilometre per hour zone is already in existence for sections of Dublin city centre north and south of the Liffey. This is being extended to include an area stretching from Bolton Street to St Stephen's Green, and from Trinity College to the Four Courts at Bridge Street.
The Automobile Association (AA) has criticised the move. The AA spokesman Conor Faughnan believes this will result in,
Handing out penalty points to people to no good purpose.
Dublin City Council argues it will make the streets safer. Dublin City Council Executive Manager Tim Sullivan says that it will also improve traffic flow at off peak times.
There has been mixed reaction to the new 30 kilometre speed limit in this zone of the city centre. One unhappy taxi driver maintains that
People are going to get out of your car.
A cyclist on O'Connell Street believes the new speed limit will benefit the city centre,
It’ll be safer for bikes.
The new Dublin city centre speed limit will be reviewed in six months.
