The opening of Utopia an adult sex and toy shop in Limerick has been met by a protest of prayer.
People in Limerick and throughout Munster have been urged to boycott Utopia the first sex shop to open in the region. The first branch of the Utopia chain opened in Dundalk in 1991 and there are outlets in Dublin and Bray.
The proprietor of Utopia, Aberdeen man Jim Bellamy, describes the products he sells as adult and fun toys. He says the shop opened on the back of public demand in the region.
Limerick woman Nora Bennis is head of the Solidarity Movement and the Mothers Working in the Home Group. She is leading a protest of prayer against the opening of the shop in Limerick.
Nora Bennis says there is evidence from research throughout the world that pornography feeds into paedophilia and sexual deviance.
Jim Bellamy refutes these claims and says it is a perfectly normal adult business and his customers just want to have a bit of fun.
