The number of Irish farmers growing winter cereals continues to increase.

Winter cereals have grown in popularity over the past two years. In contrast to traditional cereal growing, the crop is sown in autumn and harvested approximately ten months later.

Dr Tom Thomas from An Foras Talúntais (the national Agricultural Institute) foresees an expansion in winter wheat as it can replace imported cereals.

I think it's going to prove rather successful.

Unsettled weather in parts of the west delayed cutting for hay, which was not the case in the east of the country. Overall farmers are pleased with numbers for hay and silage this year,
