Ships moored in Cork Harbour are being used to store surplus butter produced in Europe.
Two Greek freighters moored off East Ferry in Cork Harbour are being used to store twenty million pounds worth of intervention butter, as the EEC (European Economic Community) has run out of space for it on land.
It is keeping so much butter off the market and away from consumers to keep prices high.
Special moorings had to be placed in the harbour, which incurred a cost of several thousand pounds for the Department of Agriculture. It is expected that these floating warehouses will be here for twelve months.
