Pilgrimage to the Cistercian monastery of Mount Melleray in County Waterford.
In June 1974 Pope Paul VI opened the preparatory phase of the Roman Catholic Church's 1975 Holy Year. This particular Holy Year is dedicated to reconciliation.
At the Cistercian monastery at Mount Melleray in County Waterford, the first of a series of Holy Year pilgrimages is held.
Despite showery weather, between four and five thousand people make the pilgrimage to Mount Melleray. The participating parishes are Aglish and Ballinameela; Ballyneale and Grangemockler; Ballyporeen; Cappoquin; Clogheen and Burncourt; Powerstown and Lisronagh; the Cathedral and St Patrick's in Waterford: Modeligo and Affane; St Mary's and SS Peter and Paul's in Clonmel.
The ceremonies commence at 3 pm and conclude at 4:15. These include prayers and the Stations of the Cross, the Scripture Service, and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Hymns are sung by the choir from the Franciscan Abbey in Clonmel, County Tipperary.
