The shortage of petrol combined with a strike in Dublin Port results in long lines for fuel at garages.

The February 1979 crisis in Iran caused long queues for petrol, after the the disruption of oil exports meant supplies were cut by 10%. This combined with the tanker drivers' dispute in Dublin Port, results in an acute shortage of petrol, diesel and fuel oil.

Panic buying is controlled by restricting petrol sales to £5 per customer. Garages are open for a limited time. In north Dublin, motorists form long queues at garages along the North Circular Road near Phibsboro and Dorset Street.
