Young kittiwakes are tagged as part of a European project to study the migration patterns of birds.

Members of the Waterford branch of the Irish Wildlife Conservatory are lifted up to nests on a cliff face at Dunmore East to remove young kittiwakes for ringing.

The ringing of the kittiwakes, which have a unique colony in Dunmore East, is part of the European Committee for Bird Ringing Scheme, to establish patterns of bird migration in, to and from Europe.

Ornithologists, carrying out the ringing, are specially trained and licensed for the job. After being marked, the birds are returned to their nests unharmed.
