Landslides and flooding follow Intense rainfall causing extensive damage in Mayo.

The thunderstorms which swept the country yesterday brought intense rainfall to west Mayo, causing floods and landslides on a scale not seen in living memory.

In the area around Newport roads and bridges were damaged, fencing was swept away and farmland left covered with debris. James Moran inspecting the damage near his home is in disbelief at the scale of the destruction,

I never thought I would see this.

Significant reconstruction and repair work will have to be carried out, says Padraic Walsh, a senior engineer with Mayo County Council,

Roads are cratered, bridges very badly damaged.

The reconstruction and repair work is likely to run into millions of euro, says local independent councillor Michael Holmes,

There are literally miles of road totally, totally destroyed.

In Leitir Mór County Galway one family had a miraculous escape when their house was struck by lightning during the storm. Sabina Berry is grateful to be alive
