The Defence Forces prepare vehicles for use during Dublin bus strike.

Dublin bus drivers have been on strike since 5 May over rostering terms and conditions. Commuters who do not have a car have had to walk, cycle or depend on others for lifts to and from work, school, shops, and hospital appointments. Retail business in the city centre has seen a marked decrease in trade.

Following a report from the Minister for Labour Michael O'Leary, the Cabinet authorised the Department of Defence to provide an emergency service of army lorries to transport workers from the outer suburbs to Dublin city centre.

Commandant Aidan Lernihan says because of the current security situation, the Defence Forces will operate a skeleton service only,

There will be no question of stopping at bus stops.
