Parts of Clonliffe Stadium in Santry have been damaged in an explosion, but repairs are already underway.

In the early hours of the morning two explosions in Santry Stadium damaged a reinforced concrete stand and a section of the cycle track.

The banked cycle track, the first of its kind in the country, was funded by the Guinness family.

A team of volunteers have joined workers from Messrs. Collen Bros., the firm who constructed the track, and are working to repair it in time for its opening race this evening, when Santry will host a three-day international cycle race meeting.

Secretary of Clonliffe Harriers Billy Morton tells reporter Liam Browne his focus now is on getting the stadium back to normal,

There's only the one thing...get on with the job.

Houses in the immediate vicinity were also affected by the blast, and many windows shattered.
