Watersports, cycling and music all part of the lively Lough Atalia Festival.

Lough Atalia a tidal estuary on the east side of Galway was historically speaking outside the city walls, but recent decades have seen a city suburb develop by the water.

The crowds who flocked to Lough Atalia enjoyed a programme of events organised by a group of residents from Lough Atalia and College Road. The festival is part of the Galway Quincentennial celebrations.

Live music, Irish dancing, children's art and theatre workshops are on offer, as well as a variety of watersports such as canoe and sailboard races, waterskiing and powerboat displays.

Pipe bands, majorettes and pony rides add to the festive atmosphere, and children enjoy treats from the many stalls on site. Today is also National Children's Day so the focus is on the younger members of the community.

Many of whom had come directly from First Holy Communion ceremonies

A group of environmentalists cycled all the way from Dublin to bring a message of green peace to the west. They are welcomed by the Mayor of Galway Dr Michael Leahy who offered his congratulations.
