West Berlin is an island of the West fenced off by walls and barbed wire from the communist East.

A wall has divided the city of Berlin since it was erected in 1961. West Berlin is four times the size of Dublin a 185 square mile area of West Germany located 110 miles inside the German Democratic Republic. Crossing the border between East and West Berlin takes place through Checkpoint Charlie.

The reconstruction of West Berlin after the war damage continues with the building of thousands of apartment blocks. Housing developments in the form of towering apartment blocks portray affluence. While along the Kurfürstendamm are a range of lavish shops attracting wealthy shoppers.
