For the second year, Limerick is ready to host a festival of opera.
The festival press officer May McCann and producer Patrick McClellan outline how the Limerick Opera Festival came into being.
In 1957, a group of opera lovers got together to form the Limerick Choral and Operatic Society. Their passion for opera brought about the first Limerick Opera Festival in 1962.
This year the festival is staging of four operas at City Theatre over a fortnight. These include Madame Butterfly, Don Pasquale, Cavalleria Rusticana, and Pagliacci. All of the production feature an all Limerick choral group.
