A new VHF radio signal service continues Valentia Island's long links with telecommunications.
Valentia which has a long history with telecommunications launches a new VHF (Very High Frequency) radio signal service that will aid the security offered to ships and crafts around the coast.
All stations, all stations, all stations, this is Valentia Radio.
In attendance at the official launch of the new VHF service was Minister for Transport and Post & Telegraphs, Jim Mitchell. The minister spoke to the longest serving operator at Valentia Paddy Burke. The visit from the minister coincides with World Maritime Day in Ireland.
Jim Mitchell was given a crash course in Morse code and shown how to use the modern communications console.
Head of Valentia marine radio station, Brendan Sugrue, says that the introduction of the new system means a complete update of work the station undertakes.
We will be able to cope with all the modern requirements of shipping as it is today.
The introduction of the new VHF service will help with communications around the entire Irish coastline.
