Competitors from Ireland and England take part in the Irish Spear Fishing Championship.
Forty six divers took part in the Irish Spear Fishing Championship at Valentia Island, County Kerry. There were 23 competitors from the Dublin branch of the Irish Sub Aqua Club.
A fleet of 14 punts left Valentia pier guided by local boatmen to spearfish within the limits of Valentia Harbour. One point was given for each fish landed, and one point for each pound in weight. A bonus point was given for each free-swimming fish caught.
The prizes were awarded to both individuals and teams. The individual winner was Michael Moriarty of the Curragh Sub Aqua Club with a score of 67 points. His prize included the Glaucus Trophy, an underwater watch, diving equipment and a silver spoon presented by the Royal National Life Boat Institution.
The greatest number of fish was caught by the Dublin sub-aqua club who landed 177 and a half pounds.
Event organiser Des Lavelle speared a large turbot.
