Dublin Corporation workers strike ends but a mammoth clean-up operation must begin.
A three week strike by Dublin Corporation manual workers over pay is settled as new proposals are accepted by an overwhelming majority. The workers receive an increase of 25 shillings from 1 June 1968 and a further £1 per week from 23 August 1968.
After three weeks without rubbish collection or street cleaning, huge piles of detritus have accumulated on Dublin city streets. This is very much in evidence in Moore Street where masses of rotting fish and vegetables pose a health hazard.
The banks of the Grand Canal are also littered. Meanwhile Dublin Corporation flats have chutes full of rubbish and children have no option but to play in the debris.
