Public health restrictions mean numbers taking part in the annual Croagh Patrick pilgrimage are down.

Gardaí say that the number of pilgrims climbing Croagh Patrick in County Mayo is down significantly on previous years.

This was a Reek Sunday with a difference.

Amid concerns over Covid-19 many people heeded the appeal to stay away this year. For those who made the 765 metre climb, it was a less hectic climb than usual as a result of small crowds.

Michael Green, Mayo, Muireann Kavanagh, Newbridge, Briana Woods, Wicklow, John McDonagh, London, and Val Dempsey, Cork, were among the climbers.

This is the second time in recent years that the official pilgrimage has been cancelled. In 2015, the event was cancelled due to torrential rain.

Numbers today are well down on previous years.

Instead of mass at Croagh Patrick, the Catholic Archbishop of Tuam celebrated mass at St Mary's Church in Westport.
