President hosts a garden party for athletes, coaches and others involved in the Special Olympics.

President Mary McAleese said she hoped the energy the Special Olympics games had generated would live on and lead to a new focus on ability rather than disability.

The games may be over but their good vibes were felt again at this afternoon's gathering.

Athlete James Kelly shared his memories of the Special Olympics events where he also says he found love. The object of his love is coach Anne Maire Whelan who described the games as unforgettable.

Former Special Olympics athlete Rita Lawlor is hopeful that the spirit generated will live on and that people's attitudes towards those with intellectual disabilities will change.

Special doesn't mean that we're looked down on.

President Mary McAleese thanked the athletes for giving the country a time it would never forget.
