Journalist, author and feminist Nell McCafferty on growing up in the Bogside neighbourhood of Derry.
One of six children born to Lily and Hugh McCafferty in Derry, Nell McCafferty grew up in the nationalist Bogside area. She has always had a good relationship with her mother, describing her as having a sense of humour and being,
Tolerant, full of talk. I love her, deeply.
While close to her father Hugh as a child, Nell McCafferty clashed with him in her teenage years. Unfortunately his health declined during a period of her life which was busy and fulfilling. She was involved with the Civil Rights Movement, then working as a journalist with the Irish Times, and involved with the feminist movement in Ireland. She never got the opportunity to talk to her father in depth about all of this, but,
He and I had a great time.
Their household was a Catholic one, but not focused on nationalism or politics,
All we ever really talked about politically was jobs...and houses.
