A week long summer festival opens in the seaside town of Dún Laoghaire.

The Dún Laoghaire Summer Festival was opened by Taoiseach Jack Lynch with the traditional garden party in the grounds of the Royal Marine Hotel. Former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave was also in attendance.

At the opening ceremony Jack Lynch inspected a guard of honour from the local Girl Guides.

After pottering around in the garden, the festival-goers had an opportunity to visit five minesweepers which are visiting the town on a four day courtesy call.

The festival will include daily events for the people of Dún Laoghaire and visitors. Among the musical events is a performance by the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra at St Michael's Church .
