A new Marist secondary school for boys opens in Athlone.
Most Rev Dr Cathal B Daly, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois performed the official blessing of the new Marist College in Athlone. The Minister for Justice Patrick Cooney TD officially declared the new Marist Brothers secondary school open.
The Marist Brothers opened their first school in Athlone in 1884 at St Mary's Square. The new building was opened to cater for increasing demand for places and to provide enhanced facilities for students.
