Mayor of Limerick calls for greater preservation and restoration for city buildings.
Mayor of Limerick Frank Prendergast has expressed alarm at what he calls the non-descript anonymity of much modern design in the city.
The older features of the city are frequently overshadowed by the new.
Frank Prendergast, who is also vice chairman of the local history society, says that the result of many modern developments will make Limerick city centre virtually indistinguishable from any other city in Ireland or abroad. The mayor has called for the introduction of a programme to engage school leavers in carrying out historical research into their towns and cities. The objective would be to restore and preserve the best of everything in terms of architecture, traditions, customs and general environmental amenities.
