A new craft unit opens at a sheltered workshop in Kilkenny city.

Mayor of Kilkenny Margaret Tynan has opened the first silk screen printing unit in SOS (Special Occupational Schemes) at the Kilkenny Callan Road workshop.

A not for profit organisation SOS Kilkenny Ltd. supports adults with intellectual disability in Kilkenny city and county, providing employment, training and housing in the community.

Established three years ago, the factory receives funding from the South Eastern Health Board, but relies on donations from the public to make up the shortfall in operating costs.

Over fifty young people work here in the production of textiles and pottery.

This week also sees the start of SOS Kilkenny’s fundraising week, and it has asked workers in the county and city to donate the equivalent of one hour’s pay so that it can,
