Ireland take on Wales in a tug of war challenge for Daffodil Day. The teams are made up of former rugby internationals.

Gay Byrne is referee for a tug of war contest between former Irish and Welsh rugby union players in celebration of Daffodil Day supporting the Irish Cancer Society.

Irish team captain Ciarán Fitzgerald introduces his team. They are Tony Ward, Brendan Mullin, Hugo MacNeill and Ollie Campbell. Clive Rowlands, captain of the Welsh team introduces; Derek Quinnell, Tony Gray, Alan Phillips and Ray Gravell.

The tug of war match commences, and the Welsh team easily pull the Irish across the centre mark. They are delighted to have won the contest. However, referee Gay Byrne has other ideas, announcing it is a best-of-three contest.

If Ireland had won, it would be the best of one.

Amid good humoured accusations of cheating, Ireland win the second match. They go on to overpower the Welsh team and win the third.

Hoping the Irish victory is a sign of things to come, Ollie Campbell predicts Ireland will beat Wales by a small margin at their Five Nations Championship match at Lansdowne Road on 21 March 1998. Ray Gravell praises the performance given by the Irish team in their Five Nations clash against France.

As it gave all the Celtic nations one hell of a lift.

Winners and losers receive Daffodil Day Easter eggs and courtesy of the Irish Cancer Society, everyone in the audience wins a pot of daffodils.

This episode of 'The Late Late Show' was broadcast on 20 March 1998. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
