A temporary emergency shelter has been set up in the grounds of Saint Brendan's Hospital, where the army will take care of the homeless who are referred there when other hostels are full. However, there are still questions over how the practical aspects of the scheme will work.
On the first night of the emergency service, eight homeless men, two just 17 years old, stayed at the unit having failed to find a bed in a city centre hostel. Comdt Wally Young says there is room for anyone who needs a bed for the night. While they may get a bed for the night, they need to leave for the day and are unsure of whether the bed be available again for the night.
Members of Focus Point and Simon have been holding a silent vigil for the four homeless people who have died in recent weeks.
