Westport in Mayo is to be the first town in Ireland to have an interactive 3D digital model on Google Earth.

The digital model of Westport is to go live on Google Earth next week. According to Dr Brendan Hafferty, managing director of Applied Modelling Technologies, the new technology will allow millions of people around the world to zoom in and look at Westport. The quality of the Westport model will be even better than places like New York.

This is the most amazing thing to happen on Google Earth.

Westport Town Council believes that the new 3D maps will play an enormous role in promoting the tourism and industrial potential of Westport. Westport Town Manager Peter Hynes says that the technology brings Westport to people around the globe.

They will get an instant view of everything that's on offer in this town.

Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council Declan Dever says that maps allow viewers to view the town in detail on street level.
