Mary Hanley wants writer Kate O'Brien to be given the honour of the Freedom of Limerick.

Mary Hanley, at a meeting of the Limerick branch of An Taisce, proposed that author Kate O'Brien be given the Freedom of the City.

Mary Hanley explains why she believes Limerick should honour Kate O'Brien..

If the world honours her, I think it seems such a tremendous pity that Ireland wouldn't honour her.

Kate O'Brien's work has been recognised throughout the international literary world and as a Limerick woman, she should be celebrated in her home town.

In a very, very special way, she should be honoured in Limerick.

Many of Kate O'Brien's works on the subjects of gender and sexuality were banned in Ireland. Mary Hanley has made it part of her campaign to explain to people the difference between banned literature and bad literature.

Kate O'Brien's books are the finest, the most elite especially, the most elegant books.
