Talented young musicians, dancers, singers and actors compete at the finals of the Slógadh festival in Galway.
Slógadh the National Youth Arts Festival is organised annually by Gael Linn. Slógadh aims to foster an interest among young people in the arts and aspects of traditional Irish culture. It provides a showcase for their many talents, all through the medium of the Irish language.
This year is the first time that the competitions have been open to young people from all thirty two counties, and the broad and varied selection of categories include drama, sketches, dancing, singing, traditional music and rock music.
The Leisureland complex in Galway is the venue for this year's four-day Slógadh festival. President Patrick Hillery who presented the prizes at a ceremony this evening praised the contest, in which 35,000 youngsters nationally have taken part,
Is léir dom gur eagraíocht iontach é Slógadh.
The off-stage events such as the poster exhibition, table quizzes and literary competitions are just as vibrant, but more should be done to publicise and encourage young people to take part in this, says one teacher.
One young participant is glad that there is room in Slógadh for all musical preferences, be they traditional or
Ceol nua-aimsire
Another young entrant is very pleased that he has made it to the finals,
Bíonn sé cosúil le leathanta saoire.
