RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta an Irish language radio service began broadcasting on 2 April 1972 from Casla, Connemara, County Galway.
Raidió na Gaeltachta went on air at 3.00pm with a special pre-recorded message from President Éamon de Valera who welcomed the Irish language radio station.
Raidió na Gaeltachta is for the people of the Gaeltacht, but it would be wrong to think that many of us outside the Gaeltacht aren't interested in it too.
