Residents helped to evacuate homes after severe flooding.

There were floods across Ireland after a violent storm. Parts of the east, south east and west of the country were hit hardest with many roads impassable and homes and businesses flooded.

Dublin City Council has invoked its major emergency plan and called in the army to help evacuate people from their homes in the Irishtown and Ringsend areas. One local woman said that she had never seen such bad flooding in her life time. Other people tell RTÉ News that their homes have been ruined and many have no insurance. One local councillor said that around 500 homes have been destroyed and these families are in urgent need of accommodation.

The first priority is to look after the people.
