Food donations leave Dublin as part of an Irish effort to help with shortages in Poland.

A project organised by the Christian Community Centre is collecting donations to help combat food shortages in Poland.

Workers at the Christian Community Centre, headquarters in Merrion Square, Dublin load food donations into a 17-tonne container where it will be shipped to Poland. It will arrive in the Polish port of Szczecin, where it will be collected by a representative of the Church Charitable Committee. Polish bishops will then distribute the food to those most in need.

The donations which have poured in from individuals and companies throughout the country include tinned foods, powdered milk, sugar, coffee, tea and household supplies. More than £4,000 in cash has also being collected.

The Christian Community Centre is a lay group. The collection started on the strength of members visiting Poland. While there they witnessed queues for food and the shortages which rationing has done little to alleviate.
