The project is a joint venture involving two of the biggest names in the computer and media sectors and will see American group AOL team up with German media giant Bertelsmann. The Dublin base will house the customer service and technical support services for the UK market.

Their services will involve advising subscribers about  electronic mail and news, the internet and general computer use.

Jonathan Bulkeley, Managing Director of AOL, explains what the service provides.

It allows your computer to dial in to an online network which accesses other computers.

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) says the project is of major strategic importance in putting Ireland at the forefront on international online services. Kieran McGowan of the IDA explains the service will work by helping customers with their inquiries either online or over the phone.

Minister for Employment Richard Bruton welcomes the fact that the project will bring 500 new jobs to East Wall in the heart of Dublin. He further welcomes foreign investment in what he describes as an exciting growth market.
