Ireland's first independent electricity power station in Edenderry, County Offaly.

The Edenderry peat burning plant was built over 16 months and was completed six months ahead of schedule. The plant will link up to the national grid in two weeks' time and will have an immediate effect on the ESB's energy shortage this winter.

This is the face of Ireland’s first independent power station.

Dermot Kelly Manager of the Edenderry Power Company explains that the plant produces 120 megawatts of power, enough power to supply a city the size of Cork.

The power station is owned by the Finnish Fortune Group who recently put all their power stations in Britain and Ireland up for sale. Mr Kelly insists that this will have no effect on the Edenderry plant.  He says that while the power station may have a new owner in the future, there should be no change to operations at the plant.
