Saint Patrick's Purgatory on Lough Derg in County Donegal has seen pilgrim numbers fluctuate over the years. However, this year there has been a significant increase in the number of people taking part in the pilgrimage, many of them for the first time.
There’s been a 25% increase in pilgrims.
The Jubilee Year attracted many new pilgrims and an advertising campaign promoted Lough Derg as an escape for both the body and soul.
Monsignor Richard Mohan said that the advertising campaign prompted people who would not normally have considered going to Lough Derg to come.
One pilgrim believes that no matter what you have in life, when you come to Lough Derg, you are all the same.
It’s a wonderful leveller.
