Thousands attend the Aer Rianta Air Spectacular held at Shannon Airport.

The four hour display of aircraft in flight was opened by the Spanish Air Force with around sixty thousand people attending the show.

It was an afternoon of riveting air spectaculars at the Shannon Air Show.

Visitors to the event got the opportunity to board the giant US Air Force Galaxy and did so in their droves, at the rate of five hundred per minute at one stage during the day.

Action at the event varied from a lady standing on a wing of a plane in flight to displays by hang gliders.

The Irish Air Force was represented by a display from the Silver Swallows aerobatic team.

There was only one accident at the show when a Hungarian plane came off the runway onto the grass while attempting to take off. There were no injuries.

After the success of the show, it is speculated that Shannon could become the new home for the air show.
