Saint Anne's Park in Raheny Dublin hosts the International Rose Trials.

International breeders are in Raheny hoping to find their fortune in the world of rose growing. The event took place as part of Rose Week 1985.

Judges from Europe and Japan scrutinised the fifty five varieties of roses.

Competitions like this are serious business.

Growing roses is big business and winning a competition can bring big financial rewards. Last year’s winning rose in Britain brought its owner over £25,000 plus royalties which could amount to £100,000.

The Rose Trials in Dublin are less commercial with the winner receiving Waterford Crystal. However, it will mean additional business for the winning grower.

The competition was run by Dublin Corporation in cooperation with the Clontarf Rose Society.

The judges look for colour, fragrance, vigour, health, novelty and shape.
