Joseph Mallord William Turner (also known as JMW Turner), 1775 – 1851 was an English 19th century Romantic landscape painter.
He painted in oils and watercolours, created etchings and engravings, and is revered for his expressionistic and atmospheric style.
A prodigious and artist, Turner’s output was such that by the time of his death, he had left behind an estimated 500 or so oil paintings and tens of thousands of watercolours and works on paper. He was also an extensive traveller, touring France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Inspiration was also found closer to home, as he made many trips around England and Scotland.
Thirty one watercolour paintings and works from his sketchbooks were bequeathed to the National Gallery of Ireland by Henry Vaughan, an English art collector, in 1900. The bequest came with conditions that the works are to be exhibited free of charge, and,
