Politicians Joe Higgins and Clare Daly jailed following anti waste charges protest.
Dublin West TD, Joe Higgins and Socialist Party Councillor, Clare Daly are in Mountjoy Prison after being jailed for a month by the High Court for their part in the anti waste charges protest and breaches of court orders.
A defiant Joe Higgins described his sentence as "an outrage".
Around sixty protesters gathered outside the court to support them and said that the campaign would continue.
The ordinary people do not want this tax. That's what it is.
Unions representing bin men condemned the decision to jail the two public representatives. However, sympathy from government TDs was not so forthcoming.
Minister Martin Cullen who described the situation as resulting from "political grandstanding".
Clare Daly will spend one month at the Dochas Women's Centre and Joe Higgins will be held in the Training Unit of Mountjoy. They could be joined by more protesters as Fingal County Council has instructed Gardaí to arrest anyone obstructing the council's bin lorries. Dublin City Council was also granted an injunction against thirteen people preventing them from interfering in waste collection in the Dublin city area.
