An impressionistic take on Tomás Ó Criomthain's tale of a Christmas Day hurling match on the Blasket Islands.

'Tangent's features an excerpt from the play 'The Hurling Match' by Blasket Island native, writer Tomás Ó Criomhthain (Tomas O'Crohan).

Scenes are shot along the strand of the Blasket Islands with footprints in the sand denoting hurlers and seagull cries to denote onlookers. The play tells the story of a traditional Christmas Day hurling match which took place each year on a Blasket Island beach, where all the villagers would get mixed up in the game.

The game was played on the white strand without shoes or stockings and we went in up to our necks whenever the ball went into the sea.

This episode of 'Tangents' was broadcast on 15 December 1972.
