Seán MacBride, former Minister for External Affairs, Nobel laureate and United Nations Commissioner for Namibia, receives the International Lenin Prize.
At a ceremony held in the Burlington Hotel in Dublin, Chairman of the International Lenin Peace Prize Committee Dr Nikolij Blokhiin presents Seán MacBride with the award. Those in attendance at the event include actress Siobhán McKenna and Soviet Ambassador to Ireland Anatoli Kaplin.
The International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples is a prestigious Soviet Union award. Those honoured are selected by a panel appointed by the Soviet government. The award is given to individuals whom the panel believe have strengthened peace among comrades.
Seán MacBride is the only person ever to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Lenin Peace Prize.
