Arts Express meets stage designer Bob Crowley ahead of his Dublin debut at the Gate Theatre
A look at the work of stage designer Bob Crowley. Bob Crowley, originally from Cork, has worked as a stage designer in many acclaimed productions such as Saint Oscar, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and Plantagenets.
Bob Crowley's first work for a Dublin stage was in 1990 at The Gate Theatre. Ahead of the opening of ‘Three Sisters’, starring Cyril Cusack and his three daughters, Niamh, Sineád and Sorcha, ‘Arts Express’ met stage the designer to discuss his work.
Bob Crowley has worked on many award winning productions in London's West End and also at the Everyman Theatre in Cork. In London he has designed productions for The Royal Shakespeare Company, The National Theatre, and Covent Garden.
Reporter Mary O'Sullivan spoke to Bob Crowley who says designing for theatre is "closer to directing than it is to acting".
Bob Crowley has gone on to win six Tony Awards for his work on Carousel, Aida, The History Boys, Mary Poppins, The Coast of Utopia, and Once.
