The 10 poems shortlisted for 'A Poem for Ireland' have now been announced.RTÉ Archives will publish a clip on one of the poets every week day for the next two weeks. The public has until 8 March 2015 to vote for the poem they thinks should be 'A Poem for Ireland'.
We're starting today with Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney (1939-2013), who was shortlisted for a sonnet from 'Clearances III', about his mother Mary. In "When All the Others Were Away at Mass", the poet recalls a moment of stillness at home as he peeled potatoes on a Sunday morning with his mother at home on the family farm Mossbawn in Co. Derry. He talks about her in this extract from 'Out of the Marvellous' and reads from the poem.
'Out of the Marvellous' is a documentary about Seamus Heaney made by Icebox Films. It was broadcast on 14 April 2009 as part of the poet's 70th birthday celebrations.
